Let’s face it.  If you go shopping for omega3 oils, you will see that there are a number of choices.  Basically, that’s because there are a number of different omega-3 fatty acids.  Here’s a look at the different ones, where you’ll find them and the health benefits associated with each.

Alpha-linolenic Acid—ALA

Also known as 18:3 (n-3), because of its 18-carbon chain and three double bonds, it is the shortest of the long chained polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids.  It is still considered, by some, to be the only “essential” omega-3, because the body can elongate it to form the others.

The problems with relying totally on the elongation process are these:

  1. It is inefficient; only a small percentage is converted
  2. ALA, itself, is needed by the body; conversion to the other fatty acids will only occur after the body’s needs for ALA have been met
  3. Even though they are polyunsaturated, too much fat in the diet contributes to health problems.

Omega3 oils that provide ALA include those derived from vegetables and seeds.  Good sources include canola and olive oils.  Peanut, sunflower, grape seed and cottonseed contain none or almost none.  Corn oil contains too many omega-6s to be considered a good choice, because omega-6s compete for conversion and contribute to inflammation.

Docosapentaenoic acid—DPA

Not too much is known about DPA.  It is an intermediary in the conversion of ALA to EPA and then to DHA.  It is found in some coldwater fish and other marine life.  It is believed to contribute to the overall cardiovascular health seen in the Greenland Eskimos.  Alaskan salmon may contain some.  A fish called the New Zealand hoki is a good source.  Other omega3 oils do not contain DPA.

Eicosapentaenoic acid—EPA

EPA is essential for the formation of various hormones and cellular membranes.  It is beneficial in treating depression, both alone and when combined with DHA.  It has been recommended for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and Huntington’s disease.  One researcher, Ralph Holman, states that both EPA and DHA are important to the brain.  DHA is needed to support the brain’s structure, he says.  EPA is needed to support its function.

Other health benefits associated with omega3 oils containing EPA include superior cardiovascular function, a reduction in systematic inflammation and possibly a reduced risk of cancer.

The only dietary sources of EPA are some types of fish and seafood, although a small amount is found in some varieties of edible seaweed or kelp.  Dried Wakame kelp, for example, contains about 10mg per tablespoon.

Docosahexaenoic acid—DHA

The benefits of DHA are mentioned above, although research indicates that it may be even more beneficial than EPA for some purposes, particularly for cardiovascular health.  The only dietary sources are fish and seafood.  Marine algae contain some and are being grown as a vegan source of the important nutrient.

Garlic limits inflammatory compounds

A surge in NF kappa-B can be triggered by things like allergenic foods, high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, colds, physical trauma and other infections. This NF kappa-B surge promotes the inflammation response and sets up ideal conditions for viruses to replicate. In these German studies, unfertilized garlic caused a 25% drop in NF kappa-B activity in blood samples.

Allicin: the microbe killer

Allicin, the sulfur compound that forms when garlic is chopped or otherwise crushed, not only gives garlic that distinctive pungency, it is also a powerful antiviral and antibacterial agent with the ability to annihilate potentially harmful microbes. Research studies on Allicin show it to be effective against the common cold, flu and stomach viruses. It has also shown the ability to fight off Candida yeast and even defend the body against powerful pathogens such as tuberculosis and botulism.

Peptic ulcers

Garlic cannot prevent a person from getting an infection from Heliobacter pylori, the bacterium which causes peptic ulcers. However, eating garlic may help keep this bacterium from doing too much damage. A study conducted in Turkey compared two groups of people: one group that loved to eat lots of garlic both raw and cooked and another group that avoided it at all costs. Blood samples were collected for 19 months and evaluated for the presence of H.pylori. While both groups did display comparable results when it came to the presence of the bacterium, the garlic loving group did display a much lower H.pylori antibody count within their blood.

Drug resistant Strains of Bacteria

Garlic has also shown the ability to be a potent antibiotic even against strains of drug resistant bacteria. A study published in 2003 by the University of California Irvine Medical School, showed that garlic juice displayed significant antibacterial activity against many antibiotic-resistant strains including staphylococci, enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Have you heard about this recently?  There have been numerous studies concerning Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA and brain development in infants and children.  Recent research has focused on the essential natural of the nutrient throughout a person’s life.  There is reason to believe that regular intake may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions.  It is also important to the eyes.

It is because of all of these studies and because Docosahexaenoic acid is found in human breast milk that infant formulas are now fortified with the nutrient.  Many baby foods contain it, too.

Vegans don’t always like to hear about the results concerning DHA and brain development, because the only dietary sources are fish and seafood.  Some types of marine algae are being grown in bioreactors to allow for the manufacture of supplements for strict vegans, but they are quite a bit more expensive than fish oil, which is found in most dietary supplements.

Some people are concerned about the use of fish for dietary supplements, when supplies are dwindling around the world.  But the oils are actually byproducts of fish that have already been caught for fishmeal and animal feed.

If you would like to learn more about DHA and brain development, links to many of the studies are published online at PubMed.gov, a database created by the US National Library of Medicine.  It can make for boring reading and a lot of the terms used by researchers are confusing, but just the sheer number of studies posted there should give you an idea about how much evidence there is concerning the essential nature of this nutrient.

In conclusion, the connection between DHA and brain development should not make you think that it is the only essential nutrient during pregnancy and infancy, early childhood and throughout your life.  But, if you have never been fond of fish or seafood, it is something to think about.

Hydrogen Sulfide

Scientists have lately been looking into the properties of hydrogen sulfide, a substance that forms after garlic is crushed or cut. While probably known more for the stuff that gives rotten eggs their rotten egg smell, Hydrogen sulfide also acts a chemical messenger in the body. It causes blood vessels to relax thus allowing blood to flow more freely through the blood vessels.
According to the study, published in the August 12 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food chemistry, the garlic given to lab rats helped reduce damage from the lack of oxygen to the heart. Good flowing blood is essential to a healthy heart and can be the difference between life and death if a heart attack happens.

The catch

The study was conducted using both processed garlic and raw crushed garlic. According to Dr. Dipak K. Das who led the study, while both helped reduce damage from the lack of oxygen, the rats from the fresh garlic group recovered more quickly from simulated heart attacks and had better blood flow through the aorta and increased pressure in the left ventricle.

This is probably because garlic loses most of its ability to produce hydrogen sulfide when it is cooked or otherwise processed. By crushing and eating garlic raw, you increase the chances of ingesting the compound and thereby helping the blood flow through your heart.
