While most people only count calories, one equally important but much less well-known number is a food’s glycemic index.

The glycemic index (GI) measures how much a particular food raises blood sugar levels – key for weight loss purposes, since a spike in blood sugar results in a corresponding insulin spike, triggering the body to store fat. Over time, this can even lead to so-called "insulin resistance" (meaning the body releases more and more insulin to respond to elevated blood sugar) and diabetes. Knowing the glycemic index values of common foods and choosing foods that are low on the GI scale can help you lose weight much faster.

The glycemic index of a particular food is established in a laboratory by serving 10 people a 50-gram serving of the food, then measuring how much their blood sugar goes up over the next two hours. The results are then averaged. To figure out the GI values of the foods you eat most often, you do not have to rent out a laboratory, however. Glycemic index information on many different foods is available for free online with only a simple Google search. You can also ask your physician about the glycemic index, and you may be able to get recommendations on how to build low-GI foods into your diet most effectively.

The glycemic index is a sliding scale, going up to 100, which is pure glucose. A food is generally considered to have a high glycemic index value if it is above 70 on the scale; a medium score would be between about 55 to 70, while low-GI foods have scores below 55.

Refined carbohydrates and foods containing sugar all have high glycemic index values, although there are some exceptions – fruit, which is high in fructose, a naturally-occurring sugar, are still low-glycemic, largely due to the fiber they contain (for this reason, it is always better to consume whole fruits rather than fruit juices – if you strain out the pulp, fruit juice has a much higher glycemic value than the original fruit itself).

When eating foods that have a high glycemic value (which can’t always be avoided), try to pair the high-glycemic food with a low-glycemic food in order to lower the glycemic impact of the meal as a whole on your blood sugar and insulin response. This will help reduce the number of calories that are stored by the body as fat as you digest.

I don’t know you, but I am willing to bet that if you or a loved one is depressed right now, you’d be willing to take a look at the possible remedies available to you.  This topic strikes a personal chord with me as depression runs in my family.  Can fish oil for depression work?  I absolutely believe it can.  However, don’t take my word for it.  Read the research and the rest of this article, and you’ll be able to determine if in fact fish oil for depression is a viable option.

It seems like every time we turn our heads, there is some new medication, fad, gimmick or supplement claiming it’s the magic bullet cure for chronic conditions like depression.

The reality is, very few are able to live up to their claims.  The good news is that some actually do deserve tremendous praise.  Fish oil supplements are one of them.

If you’ve been depressed, you know that it’s one of the worst things you can experience.  Getting out of bed in the morning is a chore in itself.  Most days it feels like you have to put in three times the effort just to stay on task.  You can’t focus, you barely eat (or eat too much), you lose your motivation, your sex drive is nonexistent and life just seems pointless.  Not to mention crying spells, anger and isolation.  Any hope for brighter days and an exciting future seems to completely diminish.  I’ve been there.

It is estimated that 14 million (5%) of America’s population struggles with depression in various forms and severity.  It is interesting to note that the incidences of depression have increased over the same time period there has been a decrease in fish and fish oil consumption.  Is this just a coincidence?  I don’t think it is.  It has been well-documented that high doses of long-chain omega-3 fish oil supplements have a boosting effect on the serotonin levels in the brain.  This is a known fact.  In some older studies involving giving high dosages of fish oil supplements to dogs, it was found that there was an increase in serotonin in the frontal cortex.

The Japan Factor

The number of depressed people in Japan is only a fraction of what we would find in America or other countries with low fish consumption.  One key difference to note other than the numbers is the fact that the Japanese eat a tremendous amount of fish daily in comparison to those countries with growing numbers of depressed citizens.  Is it that they have better genes?  It’s possible, but impossible to conclude at this point.  Is it that there has been some nondisclosure of depressive episodes in Japan in comparison to America?  This is also possible due to cultural differences.  The likely reason is that the Japanese simply have a higher and more continuous intake of omega-3 in their diets.  In addition to this, Japanese diets are considerably low in omega-6, which has been shown to have negative effects on mental and physical health when not balanced with omega-3 intake.

The Harvard Experiment

You may have heard of Andrew Stoll and his fish oil for depression experiment carried out at Harvard University.    The experiment involved giving one group of patients with bipolar depression high doses of fish oil supplements, and giving the other group an olive oil placebo.  The experiment was set to last nine months.

The Results

After four short months the experiment was halted because the differences between the group taking the fish oil for depression and the group taking the placebo were so vast it was deemed unethical to continue.  From these results it was concluded that the group taking the fish oil supplements experienced an increase in serotonin and an increase in blood flow to the brain which would provide a better distribution of nutrients like oxygen and glucose leading to better mental function and capacity.  It was concluded that fish oil for depression was indeed a viable option in this particular scenario.

Were the fish oil supplements to thank for this tremendous success?  Although the answer will differ with opinions, it wouldn’t seem ludicrous to think that it was.

In a more recent study conducted over a two year period it was “found that both a high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fat and a low level of DHA in the blood predicted suicidal behavior in people with major depression” (Tribole p 100).

In other words, if you’re depressed, your goal is to decrease your omega-6 intake and increase your omega-3 intake.  You can do a fast search on the internet for the common sources of omega-6 fats, and you already know that fish oil supplements are hands down the best way to get omega-3.

Now that you’re armed with this information, you should be able to determine if fish oil for depression is a good alternative for you.  In my personal experienced with depression, it sure beat the synthetic medication alternatives.  Either way, you should consult with your doctor before beginning any treatment or taking fish oil for depression.  Even though it is impossible at this point to conclusively determine that fish oil supplements are responsible for decreases in depression, the evidence seems to overwhelmingly point in that direction.

The Pueraria Mirifica (Kwao Krua BUTEA or Superba) is a botanical species of Thailand and Myanmar. Its tubers are used to improve the general appearance of the breasts as they expand the mammary ducts, in order to stimulate and expand fat tissues. Consequently, the breast becomes firmer. In addition, it also helps to maintain the collagen and new skin cells. The breasts become softer, more rounded and more attractive.

Normally these plants are found in abundance in the forests of the north, west and north-west Thailand. The tuber can enlarge and accumulate at least 13 known natural chemicals classified as phytoestrogens: the Miroestrol, daidzein, genistin, genistein, B-sitosterol, estigmasterol, coumestrol, Pueraria, compesterol, mirificoumestán, kwakhurin and mirificin.

 
To the east, the belief in miracles and rejuvenating properties of Pueraria Mirifica has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. The rhizome extract of Pueraria Mirifica contains phytoestrogens (hormones plant) which include isaflavones (daidzin, daidzein, genistin, genistein and puerarin) and others such as coumestrol, puerarin, mirificoumestan the kwakhurin, the mirificin, b-sitosterol, alkane to alcohol, fat and sugar.

It was shown that Pueraria Mirifica contains the estrogenic mirostrol of the substance, which can be found in the dry rhizome in proportions of 0.002-0.003%. It was shown that this substance is 2 times more effective than human oestrogen. The phytoestrogen of Pueraria Mirifica is also high in phytoestrogen, a substance which imitates the female oestrogen. A series of studies on cell lines of the chest and the activity of Pueraria Mirifica in vitro were performed in parallel by the faculty of Emory University.

The importance of phytoestrogens

The phytoestrogens are a group of different components of the nonsteroidal plant which can behave as oestrogen and arise naturally in most plants, fruits and vegetables. They were first observed in 1926 for their estrogenic activity, more specifically, because the position and distance of the oxydril substitutes enabled the molecule to link the oestrogen receptor. It connects the two types of receptors, alpha oestrogen and beta oestrogen.

Many phytoestrogens seem to have a higher affinity for the ERB receptors than steroidal oestrogen, suggesting that they may bring an action in different ways. Yet, despite their ability to link the oestrogen receptors, they are much weaker than human estrogens, with 105 times less activity.

Phytoestrogens are similar and so are their anti-oestrogenic activities.

 The fact to act as an oestrogen or an anti-oestrogen seems to depend on the amount of endogenous estrogens and the number and type of the last oestrogen receptor, also on the type of tissue where the receivers are located. Phytoestrogens are frequently detected in humans in quantities much higher than the endogenous oestrogen products.

There are three main types of phytoestrogens: the isaflavonnes (most powerful), the coumestranes, and lignans. There are over 1000 types of isofalvonnes but the most common are the elgenistein and daaidzein who are also prepared to raise the estrogenic activity. They are present in vegetables such as soy, chickpeas pitch, clover, lentils and beans. The isaflavonnes are also present in glucose, when they are ingested by people, they are enzimatically dissolved in the stomach by the active forms.

The metabolism of phytoestrogens varies from one person to another, and there also seems to be  a difference according to sex because women metabolize them more efficiently. The lignannes (enterolactone and enterodiol) are found in lentils, fruits, beans and vegetables. Other types, more rarely ingested are coum (found in the shoots of plants) flavones, flavanones to the chalcones, terpenoids and saponins.
