Thanksgiving is the time of year when we love to eat way too much!  We end up tired, bloated, and plagued with heartburn and gas.  This year, combat the digestive troubles of Thanksgiving Day with vitamins and supplements that speed up the process combined with a few tricks that will enable you to eat more and suffer less.

First we must understand how the body digests what we eat.  If we eat the hard to digest foods first, then it will slow down the digestion process and make you feel fuller a lot faster.  This is good if you’re trying to eat less, bad if you are just getting started on your favorite meal of the year.  Eating the easy to digest foods first will leave room for the harder to digest foods later.

Start by cleaning out your colon with soluble fiber.  Soluble fibers combine with water to form a gel the slides through your intestines, getting them cleared out for the big meal.  Drink plenty of water to keep things moving throughout the day.

Fruits, vegetables and sugars should be the first things that you eat off of your plate because they digest very quickly, in as little as 30 minutes.  Some may interpret this as an excuse to eat dessert first, which would probably work if the dessert doesn’t have a lot of fat in it!  Remember to drink a room temperature or hot beverage with your meal instead of a cold drink that can make things move much slower.  Room temperature water, coffee or hot cider should do the trick.

The next thing to eat would be your bread and stuffing.   Mix in cranberry sauce if you can to make things keep moving quickly.  Chew all of your food for a long time before you swallow so that you don’t make things harder on your digestive system.  Grains and starches can take two or three hours to digest, so make sure that you thoroughly chew before you move on and take as much time as possible to eat your meal.

Proteins and fats are bigger molecules that take a lot longer than three hours to digest.  Eat these last and conservatively to keep from getting so full that you feel bad.

One reason you feel bad and tired after a big meal is that excess food stresses the body and it becomes like a toxin in your system.  The liver and immune system take the biggest hits after overeating.  Try to control your portions so that you don’t consume more than 3-4 cups of food during any three hour period.

If your body is depleted of vitamins and minerals, it will function at a slower pace.  Vitamin C removes excess toxins before you eat so that your body is more prepared to handle a big meal.  Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10, or ubiquinone) activates your body’s enzymes and makes digestion much more efficient.  Your body makes less and less ubiquinone as you age, so many people are unaware that they are deficient.  CoQ10, along with vitamin C, boosts your immunity and removes toxins.  Vitamin C and CoQ10 are likely to greatly reduce your chances of feeling bad after dinner.

Following these steps will keep your digestion running smoothly and quickly throughout the Thanksgiving feast.  If you experience any severe symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.  Sometimes an underlying gastric condition can be aggravated by over-indulgence in food and alcohol.  Also, talk to your doctor before you buy vitamins to make sure that the normal dosages are right for you.

Chromium –not only do most people not receive enough through their diet, most aren’t even vaguely familiar with chromium and its benefits. It’s estimated that as little as 5% of the population has sufficient levels of chromium. That leaves 95% who could be deficient. Chromium is a mineral found only in trace amounts within the body, but plays a significant role in maintaining health.

The recommended daily dosage through diet is 200 micrograms. Because of the effects of modern farming and food processing, in order to get that from your diet today, you would need to eat a diet that had at least 12,000 calories – yes a day. Well you know what would happen if you ate that many calories, so getting enough chromium through your diet alone is no longer a viable option.

That means you should take a chromium supplement. To get the maximum benefits you need to choose liquid chromium. Liquid ionic minerals are water based which means your absorption is nearly 100% where as compound and even chelated chromium (pill form) will be less than 25%.

If you’re thinking you’ll live without out it. Think again! Chromium controls insulin and normalizes your blood sugar levels making it important in the fight against diabetes. It lowers bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and raises good cholesterol levels (HDL); it reduces heart disease, lowers blood pressure, and improves your immune system, to name but a few.

If that’s not enough, it even boosts the DHEA levels in your body. DHEA is dehydroepiandrosterone, and it’s well documented that it has excellent anti-aging qualities and plays an important role in longevity. Now who doesn’t want to age more gracefully? And who would have thought it could be so easy?

It seems that chromium is also directly involved in carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. There has been some basic research but there is a need for more in-depth research to discover the full extent of chromium on the metabolic action. Never the less, it certainly has been proven to have a role.

What foods have chromium? Almost all foods have minute amounts that are 2 mcg or less. Whole grains, meats, fruits, and vegetables are all generally good sources of chromium. Foods that are high in simple sugars are very low in chromium and should be avoided not just because of the lack of chromium but because they simply aren’t healthy and can reduce overall mineral levels!

It’s actually very difficult to determine the exact amount of chromium in food because the soil, the agriculture process, and the manufacturing process all affect the amount of chromium found in food. Therefore use this only as a guide:

   Grape Juice – 1 cup – 8 mcg

   Broccoli – ½ cup – 11 mcg

   Potatoes – 1 cup 4 mcg

   Beef – 3 ounces – 2 mcg

   Orange juice – 1 cup – 2 mcg

   Whole wheat bread – 2 slices – 2 mcg

   Banana – 1 – 1 mcg

   Apple – 1 medium – 1 mcg

   Green beans – ½ cup – 1 mcg

Even eating right you are going to come up short of the RDA so add that liquid chromium supplement and make sure you get the necessary levels of chromium so that you can enjoy the benefits it can offer.

What happens if you do not have enough chromium intake? The signs of deficiency can include weight loss, signs of diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, and neuropathy, which almost always disappear when chromium levels are increased.

Today’s population is extremely busy, and many times we don’t get a chance to eat properly eating on the run. It’s tough to get the needed nutrients day after day. Chromium isn’t the only mineral that we find ourselves deficient in, although it is one of the most important ones. The solution is to simply take a liquid chromium supplement each day. Then you can stop worrying!

Diet pills work in a much different way, depending on the ingredients they contain and it has to do with the way which these will affect the metabolism and the organs of the one who uses them. That is why, in most of the cases, it becomes a necessity to have the prescription diet pills. They are recommended for people who want to lose more than 10 pounds or persons suffering from obesity. In these cases, the need of prescriptions is a substantial need! There is the possibility that the pills might contain ingredients, that do not positively match with the health status of the person who is using them, a fact that will generate the need for an immediate consultation with your doctor.

In addition, we will explain the way in which these prescription diet pills function. These appetite suppressants affect the appetite-regulating region of the brain called the hypothalamus. They work by blocking the re-uptake of the chemicals serotonin and epinephrine, which create that feeling of satisfaction you get after eating a big meal. The more these chemicals circulate in your brain, the more you will feel full and then you will eat less.

Most available weight-loss pills are “appetite suppressant” medications and these generally come in the form of tablets or extended-release capsules (pills that release medication over a long period of time). They can be obtained by a doctor’s prescription, in order to make a complete analysis of the patients health. There are cases, people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, when the use of diet pills may be inappropriate for these people and they should have  medical people completely controlling their weight loss. In this respect, one common appetite suppressant is Meridia.

There are other types of prescription diet pills, such as the one that works as a fat absorption inhibitor. Phentermine, Adipex, Xenical is the only example of this type of treatment approved for use in the U.S. Xenical works by blocking about 30% of dietary fat from being absorbed into your body. Xenical is now sold over-the-counter as 10 Alli.

Meridia and Xenical are the only weight loss drugs approved for longer-term use for significantly obese people. They are also at the top of the list of prescription diet pills and that is why they are also recommended by the nutrition doctors. You should have a medical doctor to be consulted and is very necessary in most of the cases, before starting any diet by yourself. You must at least have some recommendations or some other peoples opinions related to the product you want to use. In most of the cases, when speaking about prescription diet pills, tests have to be made in order to see if your body will have a totally positive reaction to the ingredients they contain.

Acai Berry is the only berry that is prevalently used for diet programs. Accordingly, the harvesting of acai berry is very costly as well as the manufacturing of Acai Berry weight loss products. However, you may notice also that there are brands and even companies that sell Acai Berry supplements that do not have the acai berry in it or might only have very little amount.

Acai berry products must have a significant amount of acai in order to get a good market. You have learned that Acai Berry 500 emerged as the first product to be sold in the market. It was celebrated by the media and in fact was an item talked about on TV. Through these avenues, the public became aware of Acai and its healthy advantages.

There have been many products that are coming out and presenting to have acai berry content. These products may be as effective as the real thing, though some surpasses its effectiveness, still, there are many which are useless. You might have heard about Extreme Acai Berry, this product has simulated the Acai Berry 500. But despite that it has a greater content of Acai, still it has been proven that its effect is not as fast and effective compared to the first Acai berry product.

The comparative outcome was traced between two products and it was noted that the progress of weight loss was seen only after two weeks of using the said supplement. Probably this is because this brand has been blended with other components that hinder its effect. You see, Acai berry is formulated to be a dietary supplement particularly for losing weight. You can also hear testimonies that this particular product fail to give the energy that it is supposed to supply, like the other acai berry products.

The next acai berry related product is the detox version. This product is mixed with other ingredient thus making it more of an antioxidant supplement which contains little acai berry. Having this mixture, this product will not help you lose weight but it will act as an antioxidant only.

So when you look at it, this product deludes the customers who are buying it for weight loss purposes. What you can do in order not to be misinformed is to check the label and know the proportions of each ingredients present in the product. Doing this is very important in achieving your purpose of taking acai berry supplement.

The Acai berry is not cultivated naturally in the United States, thus it is hard to get hold of the real Acai berry products that easily. There is no wonder that some products only contain a little amount of Acai.

So, it is important that if you are an active user of Acai berry weight loss products, then you really need to look for genuine and effective Acai berry supplements.

Have you read or heard about DHA recently? Are you asking yourself ‘What is DHA used for?’ Here’s a quick guide to this most important omega 3 fatty acid to help you decide whether you need to include more in your diet.

Good for the brain

What is DHA used for in the brain? Most people don’t realise this but the human brain is made up of 60% fats, and approximately half of that figure is the omega 3 fatty acid, DHA. So it turns out that our brains are designed to run on this fatty acid.

Getting a good supply in the diet can help to reduce depression, anxiety, mood swings and Alzheimer’s disease.

It is particularly necessary for the proper development of the brain in unborn babies.

Good for the heart

What is DHA used for in the heart? It is used for making the platelets in your blood less likely to clump together and cause blockages.

It can also reduce triglycerides (the blood fats related to cholesterol), thereby reducing your your chances of having heart disease.

In fact, the results of many studies showing DHA’s heart benefits have convinced the American Heart Association to suggest that everyone can benefit from taking 100 to 200 mg (1-2 grams) every day as a general preventative against heart problems.

Helps to fight cancer

What is DHA used for in cancer prevention? It can help prevent cancers, such as breast, prostate and testicular cancer, and can slow the progress of cancer if it has already occurred.

Where does it come from?

Omega 3s are found mainly in oily fish. Fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna are all naturally high in omega 3s and there are many recommendations from health authorities that you increase your weekly consumption of fish to increase your intake.

Grass fed beef is another good source of DHA and the other omega 3s. This is because the cattle you eat get the omega 3s through the grass they consume. Grain fed beef has much lower concentrations.

You can also find it in other foods such as walnuts, flaxseed, rapeseed and linseed but the concentration is less.

Unfortunately, our modern diet is usually lacking in DHA. Grain fed beef is often eaten more than grass fed and the Western consumption of oily fish is usually not high enough to get a good dose.

A word of caution

Although it’s a good idea to increase your consumption of fish, you need to be careful about eating too much fish that comes from contaminated waters.

By contaminated, I mean waters that contain high levels of mercury, PCBs and dioxins. These toxic substances become concentrated in the flesh of oily fish and can cause cancers and developmental problems in humans.

This is why fish oil supplements have become popular in recent years. They offer the convenience of a gel capsule, the security of knowing that you are taking the correct dose, and some assurances about the safety and purity of the oil.

But you need to be very careful about the supplements you choose: some are made from fish species caught in contaminated waters and some are less than fresh. You will harm your health, not improve it with such inferior products.

So, now that you know the answer to your question ‘What is DHA used for?’, do yourself a favour and increase your intake for your health’s sake. You’ll look and feel better!

If you would like more answers to the question what is DHA used for, take a look at the research and information on my website. You can also learn how to choose a good supplement and find out which ones I take daily myself.

Have you heard about the International Fish Oil Standard? If you’re looking for quality omega 3 supplements, you may have come across this organization. But do you need to worry about these so-called standards? What do they mean for you, the consumer?

The International Fish Oil Standard (IFOS) is an organization that rates fish oil products for purity.

Purity is assessed by measuring the levels of heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins. These toxic substances can be bad for your health, causing cancers and developmental problems, so it stands to reason that you need to be certain that the product you buy is free of them.

But despite this official-sounding name, the International Fish Oil Standard is a private organization that charges a fee for testing. If manufacturers pay the fee and meet the guidelines, they can call their products ‘pharmaceutical grade’, which refers to a product that has been highly refined to eliminate impurities and contaminants.

Unfortunately, there’s no globally recognized standard to define what pharmaceutical grade really means. Various organizations, including the IFOS, detail some standards that are really not very high so it’s actually a rather meaningless term.

What does this mean for you, the consumer, when you just want to make sure you get a supplement that’s free of contaminants?

It means that you will need to carefully examine the label of the product you want to buy to make sure the purity levels quoted are good enough. You can’t just rely on a statement that says that the product is ‘pharmaceutical grade’ or meets the International Fish Oil Standard, since we now know this is quite meaningless.

Here’s some hints about what to look for.

A quality supplement should state its purity level on its label in a Certificate of Analysis (COA). This certificate records the actual tested levels of different impurities and toxins.

The amount of impurities should be shown as parts per billion (ppb) and parts per trillion (ppt).

For example, the IFOS, the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the European Pharmacopoeia all allow up to 100 ppb of mercury in a fish oil supplement.

This is actually quite a high figure – it’s possible to find supplements that have less than 10 ppb of mercury.

So you can see that an omega 3 supplement that boasted that it was ‘pharmaceutical grade’ might have as much as 99 ppb of mercury!

Make no mistake about it – some marketers will push the International Fish Oil Standard as a measure of purity but you can easily find supplements that exceed the rather weak standards of this unofficial organization.

If you would like to know more about my research into omega 3, and get some information about supplements that exceed the International Fish Oil Standard, please visit my website today.

Let’s face it.  Some omega 3 sources are plentiful.  Others are limited.  You see, there are several different long chained omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and they are present in different foods.

The most abundant is alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.  It is found in plant foods, vegetable oils, nuts, olives and edible seeds.

ALA is still listed as the only “essential” omega-3 in some books, because the human body can convert it into the others.  But, most scientists, researchers and other experts have come to the conclusion that the conversion process is too limited to be considered efficient.

A person might not suffer from an obvious disease if they consumed only ALA, but they would likely suffer from long-term health problems and minor or major unexplained illnesses, including emotional disorders like depression.

Children are more likely to suffer from attention deficit disorders and learning problems if their only dietary omega-3 is ALA.  They are also more likely to suffer from allergies and asthma, if their mother does not have a healthy intake of all of the different sources of omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy.

Research has proven that Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the longest of the long-chained polyunsaturated fats, is essential for normal brain development during infancy and early childhood.  That’s why most infant formulas and a number of baby foods are fortified with DHA.

It is estimated that the body can convert between 2-5% of ALA consumed into DHA, but that is only an estimate.  It is believed that some people may lack the innate ability to convert any ALA to DHA.  It is known that supplemental ALA does not correct low blood levels of DHA.

So, relying on the conversion process and consuming only omega 3 sources that provide ALA is a mistake.  DHA is not the only important fatty acid.  Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA is important, too.  Both are necessary for normal brain function and the repair of cellular membranes.  So, where do you find EPA and DHA?

The only good source of both is fish.  Some types of seafood are good choices, too.  But, you’ll need to do a little research when planning your meals, because some species, shrimp for example, contains no omega-3s, at all.  Others, such as salmon, tuna, sardines and hoki, will provide enough omega-3s to meet your body’s minimum daily requirements and then some.

In addition to include more of the sources of omega 3 in your diet, researchers recommend reducing your intake of omega-6s and saturated fats.  The easiest way to do that is through substitution.

  1. Stay away from corn, peanut, sunflower and grape seed.
  2. Substitute fish and seafood for other kinds of meat

Those are just two suggestions, but they are probably the two most important ones.

Bottom line, if you don’t care for fish or seafood, fish oil supplements are good omega 3 sources.  They are tasteless and odorless.  Taking one or two capsules per day will insure that your brain gets enough EPA and DHA to function normally and that your heart will stay healthy.
