* When you microwave food in plastic containers

DHA or Docosahexaenoic acid is a unique long-chained omega-3 fatty acid found almost exclusively in fish and seafood.  Certain types of marine algae are being grown as a vegan source of DHA, but the algae does not provide another fatty acid called Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA.

Have you heard about the International Fish Oil Standard? If you’re looking for quality omega 3 supplements, you may have come across this organization. But do you need to worry about these so-called standards? What do they mean for you, the consumer?

The International Fish Oil Standard (IFOS) is an organization that rates fish oil products for purity.

Purity is assessed by measuring the levels of heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins. These toxic substances can be bad for your health, causing cancers and developmental problems, so it stands to reason that you need to be certain that the product you buy is free of them.

But despite this official-sounding name, the International Fish Oil Standard is a private organization that charges a fee for testing. If manufacturers pay the fee and meet the guidelines, they can call their products ‘pharmaceutical grade’, which refers to a product that has been highly refined to eliminate impurities and contaminants.

Unfortunately, there’s no globally recognized standard to define what pharmaceutical grade really means. Various organizations, including the IFOS, detail some standards that are really not very high so it’s actually a rather meaningless term.

What does this mean for you, the consumer, when you just want to make sure you get a supplement that’s free of contaminants?

It means that you will need to carefully examine the label of the product you want to buy to make sure the purity levels quoted are good enough. You can’t just rely on a statement that says that the product is ‘pharmaceutical grade’ or meets the International Fish Oil Standard, since we now know this is quite meaningless.

Here’s some hints about what to look for.

A quality supplement should state its purity level on its label in a Certificate of Analysis (COA). This certificate records the actual tested levels of different impurities and toxins.

The amount of impurities should be shown as parts per billion (ppb) and parts per trillion (ppt).

For example, the IFOS, the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the European Pharmacopoeia all allow up to 100 ppb of mercury in a fish oil supplement.

This is actually quite a high figure – it’s possible to find supplements that have less than 10 ppb of mercury.

So you can see that an omega 3 supplement that boasted that it was ‘pharmaceutical grade’ might have as much as 99 ppb of mercury!

Make no mistake about it – some marketers will push the International Fish Oil Standard as a measure of purity but you can easily find supplements that exceed the rather weak standards of this unofficial organization.

Most people don’t realize this but there are a number of things to eat, both animal and plant, that are foods high in omega 3. But some have more of the important fatty acids, DHA and EPA, than others. Here’s a quick guide to omega 3 foods to help you choose.

Omega 3 fatty acids are vital for the proper functioning of the heart and brain, and can help prevent cancers. But our bodies cannot manufacture them. We must get all the fatty acids we need from our food.

ALA is another important fatty acid. Its benefit is that your body can use it to make EPA and the DHA. ALA is mostly found in plants, such as walnuts and flaxseed.

But our bodies are not very good at converting ALA to EPA. It’s a quite inefficient process – it requires about 11 grams of ALA to create just one gram of DHA.

Depending on what else you eat, the conversion process can get even worse. For example, if you eat a lot of margarine, bakery products or fast foods, you will be eating a lot of transfats, which interfere with the conversion of ALA to EPA.

Your age can be a factor too – the conversion process slows down even further as we get older.

So it seems that the foods high in omega 3 that will deliver the greatest benefits for your health are animal-based products. Fish oil is generally considered the best source as it is particularly high in DHA and EPA.

But it’s not all bad news for vegetarians and vegans. It is possible to find some microalgae products (seaweed) that have been produced in bioreactors to concentrate and increase their natural levels of DHA.

Eating animal foods high in omega 3 such as oily fish is an excellent way of increasing your intake of the crucial fatty acids but people sometimes find it difficult to eat enough fish each week to get a good dose.

It’s not only quantity though – you need to eat the right kind of fish, such as salmon, mackerel and tuna. Unfortunately, these fish are often caught in waters that are contaminated by heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins.

This is for two reasons. Firstly, they are often caught in waters such as the North Sea, which can contain these contaminants. Secondly, they are high up the food chain, meaning the contaminants get concentrated in their bodies and oil because the creatures they eat are themselves contaminated.

So the type of fish used to make supplements can have serious implications for the purity and safety of the capsules.

Now let’s look at freshness as an indication of fish oil purity.

If the fish oil you take is not completely fresh, the oil will start to oxidise. When this happens, you increase your intake of free radicals, the molecules that damage cells and help to cause aging, disease and illness.

To test the oxidation level, a supplement should be tested in registered laboratories. What you are looking for is the COA (certificate of analysis), which should be freely available on the manufacturer’s website or promotional material. Two oxidation components should be listed: the anisidine value and the peroxide value. The scores should be as low as possible. A total oxidation score of less than 20 is desirable.

So how do you choose a supplement that can guarantee fish oil purity?

Look for a product made from fish caught in clean waters, such as the New Zealand fish hoki. This is caught in the Southern Ocean, which is largely free of contaminants.

The oil should also be molecularly distilled, not simply filtered. Molecular distillation is a complicated process which removes any tiny trace of contaminant that might find its way into the product.

Next, check out the freshness of the product by examining the manufacturer’s COA. If you can’t find a COA, don’t buy the product! Any good supplier should be prepared to publish the results of tests that prove the purity of their product.

We can’t make omega 3s in our bodies so we must get them from our diet. Fish remains one of the best sources of omega 3s because it has the two most important of these fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Other sources, such as walnuts and flaxseed, contain another fatty acid, ALA, which must be converted by the body into EPA and DHA. The process is not very efficient though, so fish remains the best source of these important fatty acids.

As with adults, children should not be given supplements if there is any known reaction to fish oil, or if they have a bleeding disorder or are taking anti-coagulants.

So, go ahead and give your child fish oil supplements if you feel they could benefit. Fish oil for kids is safe and effective at the right doses and you could be doing your child’s health and behavior a great favor.
