Who else is sick and tired of FEELING sick and tired? Do you find yourself lethargic….dragging and simply unable to face the daily demands of your day? If you are anything like I used to be, the simple truth is the ONLY thing that get’s you UP and moving is a big 20 ounce cup of coffee in the morning, right? It’s true…and for me, as I grew older, the feeling of NOT being as energized, enthusiastic and “ready to go” each and every morning started to really drag me down.

The truth? Like all great self help style axioms…it wasn’t until I decided to really DO something about it, that the changes started. (and fast!) And after spending far too many hours READING about all of the successful strategies OTHER people were using to become happier, healthier and YOUNGER to boot….I decided to implement some of the same ones for myself. I STARTED with my diet….and what I PUT into my body on a daily basis, and amazingly it was truly ALL I needed to feel a decade younger in 30 days or less.

Curious to know what worked so well for me? Read on as we take a closer look below!

Filed Under: An Avalanche of Anti-Oxidants

A focus on fruit!

Quite simply, as crazy as it sounds….this was the primary change I made in my diet, and the most profound difference in how I felt on a day to day basis. The DARKER the fruit…..the more of it I ate. (and the better I felt!) Blackberries, blueberries, red grapes and cherries, strawberries and even a pomegranate or two..:-) These red and black berries are very high in anthocyanins and phyto-nutrients, and while you wouldn’t THINK you could feel noticeably better so quickly…I truly felt “lighter”, leaner and FAR more alert and agile, especially in the mornings where caffeine had been my savior!

Going Green!

Yes, I followed directions and added a heaping helping of those green leafy vegetables I’ve been avoiding since being a kid for 30+ years…:-) Broccoli and Spinach, kale and even some sprouty looking things I couldn’t identify again if you paid me! The truth? Green veggies are a fantastic way of getting a whole host of anti-oxidants and micro nutrients into your body (and blood stream) and the difference in how I felt after a week and a half of this, was truly profound!

Sexy Supplements:

The BEST thing I believe I added….were things I simply had NOT ever even heard of, or could even pronounce straight out of the gate! I started to drink a glass (or two..:-) of red wine per day for the Resveratrol content, which is thought to be a potent phyto-nutrient, AND I started on an acai berry supplement as well, which not only tasted great, but also was offering MORE anthyocyanins, anti-oxidants, trace minerals, omega fatty acids and other important “soul food” than just about everything else combined! (I did however cut back on the red wine…..and tried to get more Resveratrol through supplements, and grape extract as well)

The bottom line?

The difference in how you CAN feel, versus how you DO feel right now…CAN be dramatic if you want it! And the changes that are required are HEALTHY, easy to make and feel super good, and can literally change your life in 30 days or less if you start today!

Bonus Tip: Beware of the Acai Berry Scams! Unfortunately, many of the Acai products on the market are scams, being sold by unscrupulous companies with one hand in your pocket, rather than out to help you heal.

My best advice? If you really want to experience the amazing benefits of acai, make sure you ONLY buy genuine Acai Berry extract.

(This is the best acai product online in our opinion, and the one that we use, and recommend to our family, friends and readers alike.)

The older you get the more likely you are to start forgetting things. We tend to think this is a natural phase of growing older, but this statement could be a fallacy in need of correction. Advanced science has discovered that some of our “senior moments” or tendencies to forget may simply be due to nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional gaps in our diets are common due to laid-back lifestyles and today’s imbalanced diets. The effects of these become more pronounced as we grow older due to several reasons. As the body grows older, digestive abilities become impaired. The body may not be able to digest certain foods as efficiently as it used to. Appetites may become less, diets may change. We tend to lack certain nutrients that science has singled out to be beneficial for supporting memory and cognitive brain functions. It may be that all you need is a regular dose of memory vitamins to help keep you from forgetting things!

To meet this specific nutritional gap in our diets, include the following natural food sources regularly in your diet: fish, cruciferous vegetables, milk and milk products, egg yolks, meat, especially the liver. In addition to a good diet, you may find a more convenient way of getting all the memory-specific nutrients you need by taking memory supplements.

Memory supplement should include nutrients, antioxidants, herbs and essential memory vitamins. Here’s a list of the top memory vitamins you should be looking out for:

Nutrient # 1 in Memory Supplements: Cognizan
Cognizan is a proprietary compound containing Citocholene, a member of the B vitamin family. It helps to support energy production in the brain.

Nutrient # 2 in Memory Supplements: Vitamin B-12
Vitamin B-12, also a member of the B vitamin family supports nerve cell to cell communication in the brain and is required for the production of new red blood cells.. As we grow older, the brain actually starts shrinking. Vitamin B-12 helps support brain functions, the nervous system and age-related brain atrophy.

Nutrient # 3 in Memory Supplements: Vinpocetine
Vinpocetine. Although the brain weighs just two pounds, it takes up 20 percent of our body’s oxygen supply. The brain needs oxygen to support healthy brain functions. Vinpocetine is a nutrient that supports blood flow to the brain ensuring the brain gets a rich supply of oxygenated blood. It is derived from the periwinkle plant and also supports memory retention, alertness and cognitive brain functions.

Nutrient # 4 in Memory Supplements: Antioxidants
Huperzine A and Blueberry extract are two wonderful antioxidants that support brain cell to cell communication and cognitive functions. Blueberries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins which help to support coordination, motor functions of the brain and balance. Huperzine A, derived from medicinal plants, helps to protect neurons. Huperzine A has been used traditionally for centuries for enhancing memory skills and cognitive abilities.

Nutrient # 5 in Memory Supplements: Phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine is a nutrient that is already present in the brain. It is a phospholipid that is known to build up memory retention and enhance concentration. It is also believed to help protect the brain against age-related moodiness.

More Ways to Empower Brain Functions

Statistics show that people who take a proactive approach to health by keeping themselves active and social tend to retain more memory, cognitive and motor skills than those who live isolated lives. Exercising your brain is as important as physical exercise. Keep your brain active by performing mental exercises—crossword puzzles, memory games done regularly will help strengthen brain muscles!

Physical exercise is also necessary. A walk, stretching exercises, jogging will help to increase circulation of blood to the brain. Consult with your doctor if you have any medical condition before you begin an exercise routine. You should also consult your doctor if you notice memory lapses that may be of a more serious nature than just age-related forgetfulness.

A quality memory supplement, like Memory Matrix, will help support healthy brain functions, mental acuity, motor skills and memory retention by supplying nutrients that may be lacking in your diet.

Oxygen needs to be delivered to your brain by your red blood cells for you to feel energetic.  Many people are not receiving the oxygen that they need because they do not have enough iron in their system.  Iron is obtained through grains, meat, eggs, vegetables and supplements.  Absorption of iron is greatly increased when it is in the presence of vitamin C in the stomach.  Low iron levels contribute greatly to low energy levels, but so do high iron levels.  You should have your doctor check your iron levels before you supplement.  You can increase your iron absorption by combining vitamin C supplements or foods high in vitamin C with your meals that contain iron.

Vitamin B12 also acts on your red blood cells to help them deliver oxygen to the brain.  Vitamin B12 works best when in the presence of folic acid.  It actually helps red blood cells to form and enables the body to draw energy from the fats and carbohydrates that we eat.  Low levels of vitamin B12 are a common cause of fatigue and many people benefit from B12 injections.  It is important to have a good balance of B vitamins and don’t overdo it with any one B vitamin.  This is why some doctors recommend a B complex vitamin to their patients.  Speak with your doctor about monitoring the levels of B vitamins in your system as you supplement.

Folic acid is another B vitamin that is needed for energy.  It, like vitamin B12, helps to form red blood cells.  Folic acid deficiencies are common because it is easily destroyed when food is cooked.  Have your doctor test for B12 vitamin deficiencies and folic acid deficiencies at the same time because deficiencies in both have the same symptoms.  People that are deficient in either experience symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, depression, memory loss, confusion, weakness and pale skin.

Magnesium deficiency is the most common deficiency.  Low magnesium levels cause muscle cramps, long-term or chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, and irritability.  Magnesium is directly responsible for producing the molecule Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP) which controls our metabolism.  Deficiency is so common because, as Americans, we do not consume much magnesium in our diets.  Furthermore, we lose our magnesium when we use antibiotics, drink alcohol, or experience anything else that makes us excrete more urine.  Testing for magnesium deficiency is usually done through a hair test and is not commonly recommended.  Instead, doctors will advise patients to take a magnesium supplement and monitor symptoms.  If symptoms worsen, then it can generally be assumed that calcium is deficient, not magnesium.

When our body transforms food into energy, it creates by-products called free radicals.  Free radicals cause body-wide inflammation, fatigue, cell damage, and can lead to a multitude of health conditions.  Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that goes through the body cleaning up free radicals and preventing cell damage.  Vitamin C helps other vitamins and minerals to perform their intended functions and can help you to maintain energy in a number of ways. Choosing the best vitamin C can help your other vitamins and supplements to work faster while protecting your body from free radical damage.

Speak with your doctor about supplementing before you buy vitamins to combat fatigue.  Choosing vitamins in their most absorbable form can help you get your energy back and replenish vitamin stores more quickly.

Vitamin E known as tocopherol, it is a naturally occurring, fat-soluble antioxidant.  The antioxidant property is due to the chromane ring.

Wheat germ oil, cotton seed oil, peanut oil, corn oil and sunflower oil are rich in vitamin E.  It is also present in meat, milk, butter and eggs, asparagus, avocado, egg, milk, nuts, spinach and other green leafy vegetables and wholegrain foods.  It is absorbed along with fat in the small intestine.  Bile salts help in its absorption.  In the liver it is incorporated into the lipoproteins.  It is also stored in adipose tissue, liver and muscle.

Vitamin E is essential to maintain the structure of the membrane and integrity of the cell.  It prevents destruction of the red blood cells, sterility as it maintains germinal epithelium of gonads.  It prevents oxidation of vitamin A and carotenes and also peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in various tissues and membranes.  It is required for proper storage of creatine in skeletal system, absorption of amino acids from intestine.  It is also believed to prevent development of heart disease, delay the onset of cataract by working in association with vitamins A, C and ?-carotene.  It increases the synthesis of heme.  It is required for proper synthesis of nucleic acids and for cellular respiration.

Severe symptoms of vitamin E deficiency are not seen in humans except increased fragility of erythrocytes, appearance of abnormal cellular membrane and minor neurological symptoms. These are mainly associated with a defect in fat absorption and transport.

Vitamin E is the least toxic of all the fat soluble vitamins and hence no toxic effects due to overdosage have been recorded.

Vitamin B6 is also known as pyridoxine.  It is a water-soluble vitamin and a part of the vitamin B complex group.  The active form of this vitamin which is pyridoxal phosphate is a cofactor in many reactions of amino acid (protein) metabolism like transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation.  It also takes part in enzymatic reaction during the release of glucose from glycogen.

Animal sources such as egg yolk, fish, milk, meat are rich in vitamin B6.  Wheat, corn, cabbage, roots and tubers are good vegetable sources. Cooking, storage and processing of food, like freezing and canning result in loss of the vitamin from foods.  It is absorbed in the jejunum and ileum via passive diffusion and the amount of absorption is much greater than the physiological need.  It is excreted in small amounts in urine which is not detectable and feces.

Vitamin B6 is essential in amino acid metabolism, gluconeogenesis (glucose is released from glycogen), lipid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, formation of myelin, histamine synthesis, hemoglobin synthesis and function, gene expression.  It is believed to be involved in immune function and prevent urine stone formation.

Deficiency of vitamin B6 results in seborrhoeic dermatitis, atrophic glossitis with ulceration, angular cheilitis and conjunctivitis, neurological symptoms like depression, irritability, nervousness and mental confusion.  It might also result in decreased hemoglobin levels, associated with hypochromic microcytic anemia. Vitamin B6 deficiency is usually rare and in seen in women taking oral contraceptives, alcoholics and infants. Certain drugs like antitubercular drug – isoniazide and pencillamine combine with the active form of the vitamin and result in formation of inactive forms and are called vitamin B6 antagonists.

Folic acid is also known as vitamin B9 or folacin.  Folic acid itself is not biologically active and it is important after conversion to tetrahydrolate by dihydrofolate reductase in liver.

The vitamin is widely distributed in nature.  Leafy vegetables such as spinach, asparagus, turnip greens, romaine lettuces, dried or fresh beans and peas; fortified grain products; sunflower seeds; fruits like banana, grapefruit, raspberry, strawberry; vegetables like beets, broccoli, corn tomato; Brussels sprouts; liver kidney, yeast and eggs are rich in the vitamin. It is heat labile in acidic environments and may also be subject to oxidation.

Folic acid is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells, for the synthesis of RNA and DNA and thus prevents changes to DNA which in turn prevents cancer. It is especially necessary during periods if cell division and growth like infancy and pregnancy.  It also is important for erythropoiesis i.e., formation of blood cells.  Derivatives of this vitamin are substrates in a number of single-chain-carbon-transfer reactions. It is believed to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and ischemic heart disease, stroke. It is believed to reduce risk of allergic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and macular degeneration.

Folic acid deficiency is seen in pregnant women, women on oral contraceptives, alcoholics.  It may lead to glossitis, diarrhea, depression, confusion, anemia, and fetal neural tube defects and brain defects during pregnancy.  It can lead to megaloblastic anemia. Megaloblastic anemia caused by folic acid deficiency is differentiated from the one caused by vitamin B12 deficiency by the fact that the methylmalonic acid levels are increased in vitamin B12 deficiency which is not the case in folic acid deficiency.

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are looking forward to some excellent meals.  There will be long hours happily spent around the table with friends and family, consuming roast meats, breads, gravies and veggie favorites washed down with a celebratory glass of wine or two.   Perhaps the meal concludes with a lovely dessert of pudding, cake or pie.  Who among us has not uttered the phrase, “I’ll have a slice of each”?  With so much comforting food to enjoy, the digestive system can become a little overwhelmed, so it’s good to know that enzyme supplements can help.

Enzymes are naturally-occurring proteins in the body that act as catalysts for chemical reactions.  The enzymes in the stomach trigger the digestive breakdown of foods so that the nutrients, vitamins and minerals can be absorbed by the body.  Enzymes are hard workers, but sometimes they don’t have enough time to start the breakdown of all the carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fibre that the body has consumed before the stomach contents are moved along.  As a result, food that is not completely digested makes its way into the intestinal tract, making one feel bloated and uncomfortable.  Enzyme supplements can often help boost the body’s natural enzymes to digest more food.  This boosted digestion decreases the amount of undigested food that enters the intestines, and, consequently, decreases the occurrence of indigestion and discomfort.

Digestive health supplements, like those offered by online retailers like Digestive Health Supplements, can assist the body in dealing with indigestion, bloating, and irregular bowel activity.   Digestive Health Supplement’s origins in the health food market in Florida prompted the owner, Carol Ames, to expand her business to the online community. Many Americans and Canadians seeking to improve their digestive system now have the easy option of ordering effective, vegetarian enzymes online. Digestive health supplements such as Easy Enzymes and ENZALASE® help with the body’s natural digestive processes.  Improving digestion improves mental clarity, increases energy and balances the immune system.

ENZALASE® is an enzyme supplement that works even harder to improve digestion.  Normally, any enzyme supplements that are ingested begin their work immediately upon reaching the digestive acids in the stomach. ENZALASE® has been formulated with a enhanced resistance to the these acids so that it remains intact, waiting to release its enzymes until it has moved deep into the intestinal tract.  Released later in the digestive process, the enzymes can work to break down any lingering undigested foods and reduce the discomfort of indigestion.

Digestive Health Supplements is also pleased to offer its customers a suite of digestive aids beyond enzyme supplements. Products such as Super Omega-3 and Peppermint Plus are recognized by their knowledgeable team of health food and supplement specialists as effective digestive supplements for many people who suffer from digestive issues.

Vitamin D is fat soluble type of vitamin which is naturally present in very few foods.  It is produced from ultraviolet rays of sun. It is essential for absorption of calcium. It is also needed for bone growth and remodeling of bones. In early 20th century scientists found out a childhood disease which could be prevented by vitamin d. It is also called calciferol. It is also important in strengthening bones. There are two types of vitamin d and they are Ergosterol and Ergocalciferol. It has also been called the “sunshine vitamin” because we absorb it from sun.

Benefits of high vitamin d food:

->   It helps in preventing various diseases like chronic disease, type2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis and colon        cancer.
->   It helps in keeping teeth and bones healthy and strong.
->   It regulates the growth of cells.
->   It reduces inflammation.
->   Events that indicate need for vitamin d:
->   Soft bones or pain in bones.
->   Growth retardation or bone deformities in children.
->   Bone fractures occurred frequently.
->   Lack of exposure to sunlight.

Food sources of vitamin d include milk, eggs, cod, salmon, sardines and shrimp. Other foods also provide vitamin d cod liver oil, margarine, fortified butter, herring, kippers, mackerel, pilchards, tuna, roe and some fortified breakfast cereals.  Out of which the richest source is Sockeye salmon. Unless there is good exposure of skin to sunlight the recommended dose of vitamin D for an average adults up to 10mcg per day. Pregnant and lactating women needs more.

Winter comes and rings the message of buying peanuts that would be cracked beside the fireplace. The brightness of the winter sun reflecting off of snow and ice can lead to damage, spots, and skin cancer just as easily as in the heat of summer. Always use a sunscreen before going outside. Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. If you don’t want to invest in an expensive humidifying system, smaller, relatively inexpensive humidifiers can be obtained at a local drug store. Placing two or three of these around your home will help to humidify the dry air.

Symptoms of Winter Skin: -

1. Dry Skin
2. Older looking skin
3. Flaking
4. Redness

Skin care tips for winter: -

1.    Sun protection. Outdoor winter weather conditions, such as wind or sun reflecting off snow and ice, can be very damaging to the skin. In winters, moisturize your skin with good moisturizers and cold creams. It should be applied to your face as well as the body, and at least thrice a day, especially before going to bed.
2.    Winter wear. Because of the cold weather, we usually bundle up more. As we go in and out of temperature-controlled rooms or the thermometer rises and falls during the day, we tend to be overdressed, causing moisture to be lost through perspiration.
3.    Before taking bath, apply a little coconut oil on your body to get rid off dryness and chaps. If you’re using soap, then use a creamy one which will provide extra suppleness to your skin. Bathing do’s and don’ts. Due to seasonal cold and flu viruses, general achiness, or just wanting to warm up, we shower or bathe more frequently in hot water in the winter. This contributes to itchiness by drawing additional moisture from the skin.
4.    Moisturize to the max. Because indoor and outdoor conditions are drier in winter, use moisturizers more frequently; you may also want to switch to heavier emollients and creams during this season.
5.    Lip service. Chapped lips are a common problem in winter months. We tend to make the problem worse by licking our lips to give them moisture, but, as that evaporates they tend to dry out even more. To add to the problem, our lips tend to him as we age and are more susceptible to cracking.

Home Remedies for Glowing Skin: -
