Occasionally leaks or breaks in breast implants does occur. In fact, one study of implants that had been in place 1-25 years revealed that 63.6% of them had either ruptured or were leaking. () In addition, it is estimated that 3% of those undergoing breast implant surgery will suffer leakage and deflation within three years. Fortunately, if the implant fill is simply salt water it will be absorbed by the body without any bad side effects. If the implant leaked silicone gel, a scar may form around where the leaking gel collects in the breast. It is also possible for the silicone gel to migrate through the lymphatic system to another area of the body. Silicone gel has been associated with connective tissue disorders. It may be not be possible to remove all the silicone gel. In any scenario of implant breakage, secondary operations may of coarse be necessary for replacement of the leaking implant. Possible causes of rupture include: over or under filling of the implant with saline solution, excessive compression during a mammography, site injury to the breast, normal aging of the implant, damage from surgical instruments during the surgery, capsular contracture, or closed capsulotomy, and trauma or intense physical manipulation.
